«How to get more likes on social media” has been selected for Annecy, the worlds largest festival for animated films.
The film was selected from among 3,090 submitted films from 93 countries, and participates in the competition program Commissioned Films in Competition.
The film is directed by Julian Nazario Vargas and Stian Sydsæter. In collaboration with SAIH (Students' and Academics' International Aid Fund) and their Radi-aid campaign, they have made a satirical film "which shows an aid worker's search for likes in Africa with an oblique view". The animation studio Animaskin is the film's producer.
This is the only Norwegian film in this year's competition programme. Director Vargas is naturally delighted. - Annecy is the Cannes of the animation world, so getting a film here is like a birthday, Christmas Eve and getting a "vimeo staff pick" at the same time, he says. - When you think about how much animation is produced and the standard of studios in London, LA, New York and Paris, it is almost absurd to bring a film here. It is also funny that our film with a budget of 150,000 is located side by side with films that have cost tens of millions to make.
The other directors in the program are legends in the international industry that we have looked up to for years, he says.
The film won gold in Visuelt 2018, Grafill's professional award. Then the jury wrote: "A strong social commentary on SoMe society and how it can make us antisocial and egocentric, told with humor and in a great and unique animation style."
The Annecy International Animation Film Festival has 8,300 accredited guests from 83 different countries, and is thus the largest in the world for the animation industry. In addition to screenings and competition programmes, the animation film festival in Annecy organizes an international animation film market, called MIFA. Here, more than 2,000 delegates, 400 exhibitors, 200 international buyers and 70 countries participate to see, evaluate and discuss the best of international animated film.
